Everything You Need to Know Before Your Big Island Stay

Stay on lava, far from ordinary. Open Gate Hostel is an eco-friendly Big Island base set on the lava fields of Kalapana, combining a relaxed community atmosphere with the essentials travelers need: breakfast, Starlink Wi-Fi, shared kitchens and workspaces, free parking, bicycles and snorkeling gear. With beaches, local markets and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park within reach, it’s a unique place to stay, connect and explore southeast Hawaiʻi.

Where is Open Gate Hostel located?

Open Gate Hostel is located in Kalapana Gardens in the Puna District, on the southeast side of Hawaii’s Big Island. We are approximately 40–45 minutes from Hilo International Airport and about two hours from Kona International Airport.

Do I need a rental car?

We recommend renting a car for the best experience and the freedom to explore the Big Island. Hele-On public bus service is available in Kalapana, but a car makes it much easier to visit beaches, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and other island attractions. Free on-site parking is available for approximately 10 vehicles.

Do you offer airport transportation?

Yes. Airport transportation can be arranged with at least 48 hours’ notice for $60 one way.

What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. If you expect to arrive after 10:00 PM, please contact us in advance so we can prepare self check-in instructions. Luggage may be dropped off before check-in, but we cannot store luggage after check-out.

Is Open Gate Hostel easy to reach?

Yes. The road is paved except for approximately the last half mile, and 4-wheel drive is not required. Kalapana Gardens is very dark at night and has no streetlights, so guests arriving after dark should carefully follow the detailed directions in their check-in email. Google Maps is also helpful.

What types of rooms do you offer?

We offer private rooms for up to two guests, 4-bed dormitories, 6-bed dormitories and a female-only 6-bed dorm. Some rooms have ensuite bathrooms and others use shared facilities. All private rooms are lockable.

What is included with my stay?

Bed linen, one towel per guest, breakfast, Starlink Wi-Fi, filtered drinking water, free parking and use of our shared guest facilities are included. Additional towels are available for $3.

Is breakfast included?

Yes. Breakfast is included with every booking and features waffles, coffee and fresh fruit when available. Espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos are available for an additional charge.

Is there a guest kitchen?

Yes. We have a large communal kitchen with refrigerators, freezer, stovetop, oven, blender, kettle, cookware, dishes and utensils. As an eco-friendly property powered by solar energy, we avoid high-energy appliances such as microwaves, electric kettles and toasters. We recommend bringing groceries with you when you check in.

Do you have Wi-Fi and space for remote work?

Yes. Free Starlink Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel, and workspaces are available to all guests, making Open Gate a convenient base for travelers working remotely.

Do you have laundry service?

Yes. Staff-assisted laundry service is available for $6 per load, including detergent. Laundry is accepted from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM and payment is cash only. Guests hang their own laundry to dry.

Do you provide bicycles and snorkeling equipment?

Yes. Four complimentary bicycles and snorkeling equipment, including masks, snorkels and fins in several sizes, are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Beach towels are also available. Bicycle helmets are not provided.

What facilities are available at the hostel?

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor communal spaces, hammocks, a net swing, TV and DVDs, board and card games, a small fitness area, charcoal BBQ, fire pit and bicycle storage.

What can I do near Open Gate Hostel?

Open Gate is a convenient base for exploring southeast Big Island. Kehena Black Sand Beach is about 10 minutes away, Pohoiki about 25 minutes, and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park approximately one hour by car. Other area highlights include Kaimū Beach, McKenzie State Recreation Area, Lava Tree State Monument, Fissure 8, local lava landscapes, coastal drives, waterfalls and hiking.

Are there local markets and events nearby?

Yes. Local favorites include Uncle Robert’s Wednesday Night Market, Kaimū Farmers Market on Saturday, Makuʻu Market on Sunday and the Sunday drum circle at Kehena Beach. Our team is happy to share current local recommendations.

Can you help guests plan activities and volcano visits?

Yes. Guests can join our hostel WhatsApp group, where we share local information and help with planning island adventures. When volcanic activity occurs, we can also point guests toward current information and important safety guidance.

Are children allowed?

Families and children are welcome. Children must stay in the same room as their parent or guardian and remain under their supervision. Dorm guests must be at least 18 years old.
